Randwick racecourse manager Michael Wood says if it had to rain he’s glad it happened early in the week ahead of Saturday’s opening day of The Championships.

Wood rated the Randwick track a Heavy 9 on Thursday morning after 24mm of overnight rain took the seven day total to 51.8mm.

“The forecast was promising towards the end of last week but it decided not to play ball,” Wood said. “It is what it is.

“I was a bit dirty driving in to work this morning but once I stepped foot on it I was pleasantly surprised, a lot happier.

“We put up a (heavy) nine. It doesn’t walk like a nine but the peno (penetrometer) is saying that’s what it is…
