Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tests positive to banned substance

The Bob Baffert-trained Medina Spirit could be stripped of his Kentucky Derby win after testing positive to a banned raceday substance. 

Baffert, who described the positive as ‘the biggest gut-punch I’ve had’, was immediately suspended from being able to enter his horses at Churchill Downs.

The trainer of Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify announced on Sunday that Medina Spirit had returned a post-race sample containing 21 picograms of anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone.

Kentucky racing’s threshold sits at ten picograms per millilitre.
